Jun 01, 2026

Baloxavir marboxil is a single-dose oral anti-influenza drug, offering convenience and speed. This article summarizes its usage, dosage, medication tips, and healthy lifestyle recommendations for reference.

I. Dosage and Administration

1. Timing of Administration

Take as a single dose within 48 hours after flu symptoms begin; the earlier, the better the effect.

2. Dosage Regimen

Dose is based on body weight; dose adjustment is not recommended:

(1) Body weight ≥20 kg to<80 kg: single oral dose of 40 mg.

(2) Body weight ≥80 kg: single oral dose of 80 mg.

3. Administration Method

(1) May be taken with or without food.

(2) However, note: Avoid concurrent administration with dairy products, calcium-fortified beverages, laxatives or antacids containing multivalent cations, or oral supplements containing calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, or zinc, as this may reduce drug efficacy.

II. Medication Precautions

1. Contraindicated Populations

Known hypersensitivity to baloxavir marboxil or any excipients is contraindicated.

2. Alert for Allergic Reactions

(1) Post-marketing reports include immediate hypersensitivity reactions, angioedema, urticaria, rash, etc.

(2) If facial/tongue swelling or difficulty breathing occurs, discontinue the drug and seek medical attention immediately.

3. Risk of Bacterial Infection

(1) This drug is effective only against influenza virus.

(2) If symptoms persistently worsen, fever returns after resolution, or purulent sputum appears, be alert for secondary bacterial infection and seek medical attention promptly.

4. Use in Special Populations

(1) Renal impairment: No dose adjustment needed for CrCl ≥50 mL/min; data lacking for severe renal impairment and dialysis patients.

(2) Hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate (Child-Pugh A/B) impairment; data lacking for severe hepatic impairment.

(3) Children: May be dosed by body weight for age 5 years and older; data lacking for under 1 year.

(4) Pregnant women: Avoid use unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

(5) Lactating women: Use with caution, weighing the benefits against risks.

5. Drug Interactions

(1) This drug has no clinically significant interactions with CYP enzyme substrates, inhibitors, or inducers.

(2) Main caution is to avoid concurrent administration with products containing multivalent cations.

III. Healthy Lifestyle for Patients

1. Rest and Recovery

Get plenty of rest during influenza, avoid overexertion, which helps the immune system clear the virus.

2. Hydration

Fever and increased metabolism can lead to dehydration; drink plenty of water and light soups to maintain fluid balance.

3. Proper Diet

Choose easily digestible foods (e.g., congee, noodles, steamed eggs), avoid greasy and spicy foods. Avoid dairy products and calcium-fortified beverages when taking the medication.

4. Symptom Monitoring

Record temperature changes and symptom improvement. If symptoms do not significantly improve or worsen 48 hours after taking the drug, follow up with a healthcare provider promptly.

5. Preventing Transmission

Influenza is highly contagious; self-isolate at home, cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, wash hands frequently, and minimize close contact with others.
